A short story...
Several years ago, an elderly woman brought in a small flat box containing the 'one and only' wedding picture she and her husband had taken over 40 years ago. They had eloped at a young age and could only afford a single 5 X 7 photo at the chapel they had been wed at. Unfortunately, within a few months of their wedding, they experienced their first 'real' fight. In a fit of anger, she ripped the photo into many small pieces. She had always felt terrible over the tirade and could never bring herself to throw the ruined photo away. She placed the pieces into the shallow box, where it sat quietly in the dark for over forty years. We grinned as she exposed the tattered fragments scattered in the bottom of the box. "I was told you might be able to help me", she smiled softly, handed us her phone number and slipped out the door. We began a high resolution scan of the pieces as soon as she left, transferring them into a computer, then started putting them back together again digitally, much like a puzzle. The hard work was ahead of us however, making it appear as though the unfortunate incident had never happened. Each piece had to massaged into place and most of the seams had to be carefully airbrushed away. Slowly the process began to breath life back into the image. She returned days later, and as she opened the folder to view the restored image, she gasped and slumped into the closest chair. Her eyes filled with tears and she quietly began to sob. After several minutes, I began to wonder if we hadn't possibly missed the mark, so to speak, in regards to our interpretation of what the actual image may have looked like. Upon gathering herself, she assured us that it was a remarkable job, “almost magical” she said. She drew a tiny photo out of her wallet taken a few days later after the wedding. This grainy little picture had been taken at an amusement park, in a 'photo booth' while on their honeymoon. We passed the two photographs around, camparing the two. She whispered that she could barely recall what a wonderfully handsome couple they were. I must admit, we probably had softened her complexion ever so slightly in the process, perhaps improving upon her already good looks as a young woman. We offered her the small, yellowed box back as she moved to the door; she said "no thank you”, she wouldn't need it anymore and then left with sparkling eyes and a broad smile. Eventually we printed twenty-some copies of the photo for her children and grandchildren. Over time, we had the pleasure of working with her on several other projects. She has passed on now, but we continue to provide service to her extended family, located all over the United States. We consider them friends we have yet to meet. The small box still sits here in the studio, somewhere up on a self amidst a clutter of sofware manuals and old tapes. We run into it once and awhile, but just can't seem to throw it away.
